Antwerpen, ? – Norwich, ?
Antonius de Solemne (of: de Solempne) was een handelaar afkomstig uit Antwerpen die uitweek naar Norwich . Daar schijnt hij de eerste Nederlandse drukker te zijn geweest. Het aantal werken van zijn pers is beperkt, een overzicht daarvan vindt u onder zijn naam als drukker in de Short Title Catalogue Netherlands . Hij vestigde zich in Norwich in 1567 en hij verkreeg de ‘Freedom of Norwich’ in 1570. Sindsdien stond hij te boek als drukker en handelaar in rijnse wijn. Het antiquariaat van Samuel Gedge Ltd te Norwich plaatst hem als volgt (cat. VII, nr. 100) : ‘Though the surviving output attributed to Solempne’s press is small, consisting of a handful of books and broadsides in both Dutch and English, he is a significant figure on account of his immigrant status and the apparent freedom he enjoyed in printing with little interference from the Stationers’ Company at a time when English printing was heavily regulated’.
